Monterey Bay Blues Festival
Donor / Sponsorship Program - 2004
Dedicated to the Blues
The Monterey Bay Blues Festival's dedication to preserving the Blues as a true American art form laid the foundation for what has grown into one of the most highly regarded blues festivals in the country. Each year, 30,000 loyal blues fans visit Monterey for three days in June to enjoy over 60 of the nation's hottest blues acts.
In the last eighteen years, Blues legends from B.B. King to John Lee Hooker to Taj Mahal, Etta James and Koko Taylor have lit up the stages in Monterey and helped carry the torch forward to new blues stars like Keb Mo, Robert Cray and Shemekia Copeland.
A PASSION FOR YOUTH EDUCATION
Founded as a not-for-profit organization in 1985, the MBBF founders' vision placed special emphasis on developing an ambitious grants and scholarship program for youth. Their objective from the beginning was to positively impact talented young people and supportive community youth organizations through funding from festival profits and donations.
Over the last decade MBBF's Youth in the Arts program has touched the lives of thousands of deserving students through generous cash awards, further enabling them to pursue their dreams.
GRANTS AND SCHOLARSHIPS
At a time in which schools are rapidly loosing funding for arts programs, The Monterey Blues Festival has stepped in to help fill the vacuum. In 2004, one hundred twenty-five students received scholarships. Eight of the recipients who demonstrated the highest aptitude and the strongest desire to share their gifts earned medalist honors entitling them to MBBF's largest scholarships. Grants to a variety of high school arts programs throughout the region has helped to build diverse and accessible study programs.
DONATION PROGRAM
All MBBF grant and scholarship funds come directly from festival profits, and donations from individuals and organizations, for which the MBBF is very grateful. The future growth of MBBF's programs which include expanded funds for scholarships, a Blues in the Schools Program, and a permanent Blues Museum and Archive, are contingent upon the growth of the festival and the largesse of donors.
As a result of decreasing state and federal financial support for the arts, MBBF is expanding its Donors program to bolster support for youth in the arts. They also intend to more effectively acknowledge those individuals and organizations that help make their programs possible. Please contact MBBF to learn more about donation categories and benefits.
